By: Knowledge Crates

Are you ready to bring some winter wonderland magic into your home? Grab a canvas and get set for a frosty fun time with our Puffy Paint Snowman activity!

This project from our Explore Weather: Preschool crate is adorable and educational, hitting those preschool learning areas like combining materials and working those tiny hands. So, let's dive into this chilly adventure.

Supplies

  • Canvas or heavy cardstock

  • Shaving cream

  • Glue

  • White or clear glitter (optional)

  • Thick and thin paintbrushes (for broad strokes and fine details)

  • Black and blue paint

  • Bowl and measuring cups

  • Googly eyes

  • Black Buttons

  • A small piece of orange construction paper for the nose

Instructions

Now that we’re ready … let's do this!

1. Paint the Winter Sky

First things first, let's set the scene! Grab your blue paint and give that canvas a lovely sky-blue backdrop. Once done, set it aside to dry while you prep for the next frosty steps.

2. Mix Up Some Snowy Goodness

In a bowl, whip up a snowy concoction by mixing 1/2 cup of shaving cream with 1/4 cup of glue. Imagine making fluffy clouds for your snowman—this is going to be fun!

3. Building Mr. Snowman

Base Layer: With your puffy paint, start by drawing a large circle at the bottom for the snowman's base.

Body & Head: Stack two more circles above for the body and head. Ah, look at him taking shape!

Glitter Magic: Sprinkle some glitter over your snowman for that twinkling winter effect. Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

4. Add Those Details

Eyes, Nose, Buttons: Time to accessorize! Stick on googly eyes, a carrot nose, and cute buttons using your Puffy Paint Snowman Kit.

Top Hat & Smile: Grab your black paint and give your snowman a stylish top hat and a cheerful dotted smile.

The Finishing Touch: Once everything is perfectly painted and sprinkled, set your masterpiece aside to dry. And voila! When it's ready, hang it up for everyone to admire.

Here are some questions to ask before, during, and after the activity to keep the learning going!

  • Shape Talk: "What shapes do we need to make our jolly snowman? How many circles will we use?"

  • Mixing Magic: "What do you think will happen when we mix our glue and shaving cream together?"

  • Puffy Paint Feels: “Have you ever touched puffy paint when it's dry? What does it feel like now?”

Preschool Learning Standards Addressed in this Activity

  • Combine a variety of materials to create a work of art.

  • Use hands, fingers, and wrists to manipulate objects.
